The real cost of poor time management: A wake-up call

What we don’t realise is poor time management isn’t just about calendars and to-do lists; it’s about priorities.

For me, it took a health scare to fully understand the consequences of ignoring what’s truly important. After a midlife health check revealed high heart rates and a concerning BMI, paired with the sudden loss of a friend to a heart attack, I got the wake-up call I desperately needed.

My lifestyle habits weren’t terrible, but I tricked myself into thinking they were “good enough.”

What was terrible was my attitude towards time. I never had time – no time for exercise, no time for a healthy eating pattern. Time time time was my excuse time and time again.

A shift in priorities

The problem wasn’t a lack of time; it was misplaced priorities.

I always told myself I didn’t have time to exercise or plan healthier meals. I excused my snacking habits and indulgent breakfasts as trivial.

But when I made a conscious choice to prioritise better habits, everything changed—without exercising more.

Simple swaps like cutting out snacks and drinking herbal teas had a profound impact. My energy improved, and mornings no longer felt like a struggle.

But where’s the real lesson here…Prioritisation was the problem.

Time excuses in Leadership

In business, the “I don’t have time” excuse is all too common. I’ve been there—prioritising targets and KPIs over meaningful conversations with my team.

I missed opportunities to support their growth, address challenges, and build stronger relationships.

Time became my convenient excuse, and I operated in a transactional, “headless chicken” mode. But I’ve learned that time isn’t the issue—it’s how we choose to spend it.

The role of personality and Insight Discovery

Your approach to time management is deeply tied to your personality style and preferred colour energy.

For example, claiming expenses used to frustrate me, while others I envied handled it effortlessly.

It wasn’t their workload—it was their priority.

Their natural style aligned with tracking numbers, whereas mine didn’t. Insight Discovery helps identify these tendencies, offering strategies to align your priorities with your personality style.

The consistent push to “next week”

Think about the tasks you always push to “next week.” These are the ones you don’t see as priorities.

Changing habits starts with awareness and a commitment to act.

Tools like Insight Discovery can help uncover what holds you back and teach you how to manage your time in a way that complements your strengths and challenges.

Make time, don’t find it

Time is never found—it’s made.

Whether it’s improving health, building meaningful relationships, or supporting your team, shifting your priorities will deliver lasting benefits.
