A decision making process; scenario mapping

Do you give your people enough time and structure to make better decisions?

In fast-paced environments, decisions are often made on the fly—sometimes with little clarity and even less ownership. But if we want managers to truly lead (and not just react), we need to give them the tools and space to make confident, informed decisions.

That’s where Scenario Mapping becomes a powerful part of the decision making process.

In this short video, I walk through how scenario mapping works and how it can help your teams become better, faster decision-makers—closer to the customer.

What’s in the Video

In the video, I give a real-world example of how to use Scenario Mapping as part of the decision making process. It’s simple, but transformative:

Scenario Mapping involves three key steps:

  1. Understanding the Options
What are the realistic choices available in this situation?

  2. Clarifying the Criteria for Success
What do we want to achieve? What does ‘good’ look like?

  3. Comparing Options Against the Criteria
Which path best meets the needs or values we’ve agreed on?

This approach not only supports better decisions—it makes them easier to explain, measure, and repeat.

Why the Decision Making Process Matters

When decisions are always escalated, senior leaders stay stuck in the day-to-day. But when you empower your managers to think clearly and act with confidence, you build leadership at every level.

A strong decision making process creates:

  • Clarity – Everyone understands what a good decision looks like

  • Consistency – Decisions are based on criteria, not personal bias

  • Confidence – People feel trusted and supported to choose wisely

How This Supports Leadership Development

By giving your team a clear framework to evaluate options, you’re not just offloading decisions—you’re developing capability.

This shift is crucial if you want to move from firefighting to future-planning. It also aligns with a values-led, high-trust culture, where leaders at all levels feel empowered to act.

Empower your team. Sharpen your strategy. Improve your decision making process.
